Hello new £2 fare cap, it’s a shame you’re so underwhleming

Don’t get me wrong; it’s a good thing that the government are doing something to encourage bus travel. It’s just a shame that they didn’t go further.

As of writing (Jan 1st), a new £2 fare cap will apply to buses all over the UK. Except for London. Oh, and Manchester. Don’t forget Merseyside and West Yorkshire with that too. To be fair, bus fares are already capped in these areas, but there’s more! Since the cap is voluntary, some bus companies are just not doing it and half of the bus companies that are doing it have a bunch of exceptions for specific routes! All over the UK, right?

Even worse; this cap only lasts until 31st March. Better enjoy it while it lasts, because that’s all you’re getting.

We think that this is not enough. In the current cost of living crisis, people don’t want help that is inconsistent and full of loopholes, they want action. This is why we’re campaigning for the cap to be extended indefinitely and applied consistently.

More details of our campaign should emerge soon, but if you want to help the best way is to volunteer with us. See opportunities here.
